We are pleased to announce that the speaker for our March 18 meeting will be Warren Dranit, one of the top IP lawyers in the state, discussing intellectual property issues on the web. Here's his description of the talk:
From Google, Facebook and Yelp to websites for local businesses, a common thread is the intellectual property rights of the many players involved. What are the rights implicated by how the website is constructed and how it is used? Who owns the rights? What content can be used and why? Who is responsible for the content?
In a wide ranging but informal conversation, Warren will address a number of these key questions and work to answer your questions about these often misunderstood issues. He'll cover topics including:
Overview of IP rights in content
Liability for user generated content (including protections under the Communications Decency Act and compliance with the DMCA’s notice and take down provisions)
Using third party content including concepts of fair use
Internet advertising including use of third party trademarks
If time permits, overview of Terms of Use and Privacy Policies
